What the table can't show

Open-source forums come closest
Discourse (with an ActivityPub plugin) and NodeBB (natively) even federate, and they're self-hostable and truly yours. A forum is a wonderful thing, but it's built around threads and categories. Bonfire brings that same ownership to a fuller shape: groups, circles, events, and decisions your community makes together.
Federation is a work in progress, ours included
Bonfire's social layer federates across the fediverse today; group federation is still being built, in the open with the W3C task force. ATmosphere tools like Acorn and Roundabout hit the same wall, as ATproto has no cross-server group primitive yet.
The SaaS trade is convenience for control
Circle, Skool and Mighty are polished and quick to start, but your community lives on their platform, under their pricing, exportable only as far as they allow. Bonfire trades a little setup for a space that stays yours for good.
