The work behind the print
Follow the piece from Rocco’s first pencil sketches through thousands of white marks on black, then into the BeeInk workshop where every sheet was pulled and checked by hand.

Searching for the scene
The first pages explore the gathering in loose graphite, testing how its animals, fires and landscape might hold together.
EARLY COMPOSITION STUDIES -
Making one shared landscape
Rocco then drew the entire gathering in graphite. The fires, trees and open sky give many separate figures a common rhythm.
THE FULL PENCIL COMPOSITION -
From graphite to black
With the composition beside him, Rocco moved to the final black surface. The pencil drawing remained the map; the finished texture would come from white linework.

One animal at a time
Short strokes build weight and direction. The bear comes forward first while the rest of the scene remains only a set of quiet outlines.
THE BEAR TAKES FORM -
Light before detail
Dense linework turns the upper edge into a night sky. Below it, the untouched stag shows how much planning remains visible before each area is filled.
MOONLIGHT, HATCHING AND GUIDELINES -
Every mark has a direction
At this scale, the method becomes clear: repeated lines curve around bodies, describe fur and separate one animal from the next.
THE SCALE OF THE LINEWORK -
A gathering within the gathering
A second fire appears higher in the landscape. Even this small corner becomes its own scene, surrounded by trees and watched over by the larger figures below.
THE SECOND FIRE -
The community fills in
The central fire finally joins the bear, stag and smaller neighbours. Separate pockets of activity now read as one connected landscape.
THE CENTRAL GATHERING -
Almost every part is speaking
The final pass balances the bright areas, deep shadows and small transitions that let the eye move through such a dense scene.

The forest, complete
At a distance the drawing becomes one bold black-and-white image. Up close, it opens back into the thousands of individual marks it’s made of.

From paper to ink
At BeeInk, the finished artwork moves from the drawing board into a screen-printing setup. The image-bearing screen is aligned over the paper so every sheet meets it in the same place.
ALIGNING THE SCREEN AND PAPER -
Ink across the mesh
Black ink is worked across the prepared screen with a squeegee. Even pressure carries the image through the open areas of the mesh and onto the paper below.
WORKING THE BLACK INK ACROSS THE SCREEN -
The forest appears on paper
As the screen lifts, the dense woodland returns as a single black impression, surrounded by the wide white margin of the final print.
THE FRESH IMPRESSION ON THE PRINTING BED -
A careful hand-off
The fresh sheet is lifted by its edges, keeping hands clear of the wet ink and preserving the fine marks carried over from Rocco’s original.
LIFTING THE FRESHLY PRINTED SHEET -
Every pull is checked
Ink coverage, edges and placement are inspected before the sheet leaves the press. The dark field must stay rich without losing the smallest white details.
CHECKING THE PRINT BEFORE IT LEAVES THE BED -
Sheet after sheet
The completed prints are laid out separately while the ink settles and dries. The singular drawing has become a physical run of hand-pulled impressions.
THE PRINTED RUN AT BEEINK COOPERATIVE -
Made to live on paper
The finished 35 × 50 cm print preserves the fine linework on heavy 300gsm stock. Every copy in the edition of 250 is signed and numbered by Rocco.
